Not too late to say sari'

Teaming up saris with pants is the latest trend. Here's how to carry off the look.

Today, there are many ways to wear the sari — the dhoti sari, the skirt sari, the cocktail sari, etc. Adding to that list is the sari pants. Actress/host Mini Mathur was spotted at the Lakme Fashion Week earlier last week where she raised eyebrows with a sari paired with distressed jeans.

Stylist Indrakshi Ria Pattanaik decodes the look. “It is a very quirky look and the main thing here is that it needs to be draped very well. Since there is no petticoat here, the pleats, etc. need to fall the right way to show enough amount of jeans.”

It is very important to choose the right sari — one that is not rigid. Indrakshi says, “Byloom, cotton, or silk saris that fall and give shape to the body is important. Also, denim is a very thick material, so one has to be very careful while draping the sari or it could end up looking too fluffy.”

If you’re looking for something more structured, but with the drape of a sari, then the deconstructed sari look is in this season. It has the drape of a sari, but is very easy to carry off because there are no pleats involved.

Shilpa Reddy, who was spotted wearing this at a recent get-together, gives a few pointers. “The look is a perfect mix of traditional and modern. I wanted the drape of the sari and so I used it as part of the ensemble,” she says.

When trying out a new look, it also helps to keep things simple. “And yes, no look is complete without your hair and makeup. Try sticking with something minimal and tie up your hair so that the attention remains on the dress,” Shilpa adds.
