Jumpsuits are, without a doubt, a statement style. The head to toe, all in one garment moves beyond a simple dress or hot pants and casual combo into more fashionable territories (except for when one has to answer the call of nature, maybe, grh!). But still, that said, there are various new trends within the world of jumpsuits. The latest? According to designer Rebecca Dewan, exaggerated shoulders, sailor collars, cropped cap sleeves, crisscross shawl collar, trouser-style bottom, quirky details like the stitched belt and oversized pockets, etc. are trending. So let today’s piece sway your mind to try out this hippie trend.
If you are on the fence about whether or not you could pull off the look, designer Gautam Gupta shares these helpful tips for buying the right one. “Shop for the perfect fit. Ultimately, the jumpsuit you choose should fit close to your body but should not be too snug. If you choose a jumpsuit that is too baggy, the shape of your body will get lost in the folds of the fabric. Alternatively, if you go for one that is too tight, you may find that it pulls and binds all day and that it doesn’t look flattering on your body. Look for a jumpsuit that falls somewhere in the middle. It should accentuate your figure, nipping in at the waist to help create an hourglass silhouette. Additionally, the torso of the jumpsuit needs to be long enough to accommodate your actual torso so that it doesn’t become uncomfortable to wear throughout the day.” He adds, “Consider adding a belt. If the jumpsuit you purchase doesn’t already have a belt, consider adding one of your own. This can help define your waistline, creating a more figure flattering look. Try topping it off with a blazer. Pairing a jumpsuit with a blazer is a great way to create a stylish and sophisticated look. This is a good way to ease into wearing jumpsuits. The blazer helps visually break up the top and bottom of the jumpsuit, making it look more like a two piece outfit. Start with a solid coloured jumpsuit. If you aren’t sure that you would be comfortable wearing a jumpsuit, a good place to start is by finding one in a solid neutral colour such as black, white, or navy. When you feel confident in your solid coloured jumpsuit, you can then start experimenting with different styles.”
The jumpsuit has replaced the cocktail dress clearly, says designer Swatee Singh who advises fashionistas to go for new cuts, “Look for details such as a waist cinching bands or built in corsets to offset wide legged jumpsuits that are glam and dramatic. If you are in the mood to go dramatic then there’s nothing dreamier than ruffles. Look out for styles like cascading ruffles or a waterfall of tiered frills running from the waist down. The next evolution of cut outs are the faux rips along the seams, revealing glimpses of skin. One could also opt for extremely square and extremely round shoulders as they are elegant options.”
Designer Amy Billimoria feels that jumpsuits are a hot favourite not because they look beautiful as a day outfit but also because they make up for an haute eveningwear too. “Sheer deep necks with crossover legs, asymmetric hemlines and ruffled edgings all are now a huge part of the jumpsuit trend. Wearing two tones intermingled in a single ensemble or an embellished sequinned flower intertwined with floral prints in a variety of fabric is a great party option. However, make sure that you never overdress or over accessorise your jumpsuit.”
Adding a few more options in terms of new styles, designer Nancy Luharuwalla shares, “For me, the top must have jumpsuits this season include the chic, short-length jumpsuit (it works just fine for a brunch as well as a late evening outing), athletic hoodie rompers, menswear inspired jumpsuits and jumpsuit in lace or net fabric. Low-waist, however flattery it may sound, avoid wearing that when opting for a jumpsuit.”
Lastly, designer Amit Sachdeva cautions, “Avoid opting for thicker fabrics while choosing a jumpsuit, and be careful with the kind of footwear you choose to wear. Choose wisely according to the length of jumpsuit.”
