Anamika Khanna’s show, which closed the Summer/Resort chapter of Lakme Fashion Week 2018, was a spectacle to behold.
As the audience filed onto the high platform of Bandra Fort looking up at its set of stone stairs, the show began to the beating of djembes and other African drums.
As the beats built to a crescendo, a group of contemporary dancers hailing from Goa took to the stage in sand-coloured loose garments.
As they left the stage, the first models took their place, gliding out in Anamika’s interpretation of the Fashion Week’s theme — Nudes Reinvented. The designer blended Indian colours and detailing like zardosi work with global contours and edgy designs, creating a youthful line that blended the Indo-western sensibilities perfectly.
Using shades that ranged from custard and salmon to splashes of vivid red, Anamika created her line of nudes — catered to the diverse palate of skin-tones that one finds in India. As the djembe players built their rhythm, showstopper Kareena Kapoor Khan glided onto the stage. Explaining the reasoning for using black for Kareena, Anamika later said, “I really wanted her to stand out in the midst of the softer, subtler tones.”
“The word diversity was stuck in my head while creating this collection. I also wanted to bring out the sense of woman power through my designs,” she added.
For Kareena too, the show was a memorable one, especially since the concept added its charm. “I love nudes, I love the whole campaign for diversity. And the colours that we’ve got onboard with this collection, whether it’s caramel custard or salmon pink, are just perfect for the season,” she smiled.
Though she looked every bit the fashion diva, Kareena also confessed to being a hoarder. “There’s nothing I would throw out of my closet this year, because I’m a hoarder and I still have my clothes from years and years ago,” she laughed.
“Actors are overall much more fashion conscious than before. It’s great — as long as your comfortable in what you’re wearing. When you’re comfortable, I think you automatically look fashionable and chic,” she added.
