Every year, we witness a massive change in fashion trends. While, velvet dress came back into fashion in 2017, it could be a definite no-no this year. Speaking to designers, models, and young fashion enthusiasts about what they think is coming in the fashion this year and what goes out from last year? Prasad Bidapa, a local fashion expert and curator of Heritage Fashion Weeks says, “Last year's biggest trend for me was the sari. A lot of young women started wearing beautiful Heritage saris in silk and cotton. Modernising it with tee shirts, corsets and kurtis as cholis, dropping the petticoat and wearing leggings instead, fashionista's in the know realised it was the Return of a Classic.”
Revika Poddar, a young fashion designer tells us that, “The trend that rocked the fashion market last year was the choker trend. It's effortless and stylish and the look is bound to elevate a simple design.” Whereas Sonia Thiyam, a fashion blogger believes checkes and plaids, polka dots came back like a boss and it was everywhere and still continues be, slogan tees, chunky shoes and platforms it was a complete 80s throw back as 2017 went by. She says, “A lot of brands gained more attention such as OFFWHITE, VETEMENS and Balenciaga and they left so much impact on the fashion market that all other brands almost followed the same vibe. I think most are here to stay especially suits with checks and plaids, boots. The colour red which rocked the entire fashion street might be replaced and animal print will be making a comeback!”
What New Trends this year? What replaces what? The social media is the biggest cause for trend evolution says Ayushi Tyagi, a textile design student at NIFT and elaborates, “The trend I think will be coming this year is transparent plastic, see through bags, clothing and shoes. They can be worn mostly with western attire and I think it's convenient!”
Even though chokers were the most worn trend last year, Revika feels that it's been over worn and sophisticated, “Even though I love the look, I feel it is very exhausted. 2018 is going to be about sheer, skin revealing fabrics in sophisticated cuts and lots and lots of tassels.” Sonia thinks animal prints are definitely making a comeback this year, “It's really tricky to get this look right so one has pair animal prints with solid colours like white grey and black. Tennis shoes will be a definite trend this 2018. It can also be worn in all ways as its super versatile and lastly people are leaning towards an androgenic style and it makes me super happy as it is timeless.” Prasad says, “The modern sari is here to stay. There will be even more avatars of it by designers like Abraham & Thakore, Hemant Trevedi, Manish Malhotra and Sabyasachi.”...
