From popular labels like Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel, Marc Jacobs to high street fashion brands – designers are now focused on tapping the ‘globetrotters’ with some funky and functional looks off and on the runway. From special collections to multi-functional accessories – a traveller’s wardrobe should be light and on point. We ask the experts to decode the look for the young, stylish and smart travellers, who love to flaunt airport looks and vacay wardrobe from time to time.
Mumbai-based designer duo Saaksha and Kinni, point out that the innovations in this category are the oversized, printed boho luxe silhouettes and colours. Citing the example of Olsen twins, they feel that it is a very Gypsy-like free-spirited approach to dressing. The designers mention, “The trend is all about making oversized, slouchy, comfortable clothing double up as chic and contemporary without looking too ill-fitted and casual. One can pair oversized shirts and blouses with more fitted trousers. Wear an oversized dress with a belt or an oversized trench coat over a suit. Also, work the print on print look. Oversized jackets and capes are a must, not just for weather protection but also to nail anti-fit chic comfort. Fun printed oversized maxi dresses are also a staple - they are comfortable whilst travelling but also exude free-spirited comfort.”
The best thing about this look is that it allows you to look fashionable across the globe, not looking like you are from any particular country or region. A look that is comfortable yet ultra chic is what defines a global traveller for Sreyashee Halder, a Design head. The designer explains, “You don’t have to invest much to create a perfect wardrobe where unrelated separates are teamed up together in an eclectic manner to give a completely new look. Whether it’s a belted casual trench worn over a gathered maxi skirt, a simple shirt dress worn with sneakers, a fun folkloric midi boho dress teamed up with beaded or junk accessories, or even a ditsy floral maxi dress worn over a peasant blouse, it’s very important the look goes with your personal style.” Whereas, Kapil Mahtani, a designer and founder of a brand, talks about accessorising right with “A smart pair of shorts, t-shirt, jacket and sunglasses along with a bag – pack for men; and, a pair of leggings, a comfy t-shirt, sunglasses with a handbag for women
. A pair of good sneakers and a quality handbag or bag-pack and sunglasses are a must along with in-built phone chargers and remote control trolley bags to be prepared for anything.”
The idea of airport fashion has evolved with time, and one regularly sees several celebrities pulling off striking looks like they are ready to march on a runway. Vikas Gupta, a Divisional Chief Executive Officer, mentions the key innovations like the new blends of cotton and linen for all-day wrinkle-free wear play an important role in this category. Since travel wear is all about comfort and ease, he elaborates, “Apart from planning your trip and managing bookings, wardrobe also plays an important role. The all-weather blends with wool are another innovation that makes suits and jackets, equally comfortable through winters and summers. The light and breathable natural fabrics are healthier for the skin, and more comfortable to wear throughout long and active vacation days. From basics to mix and match and sumptuous jackets to printed dresses and the right accessories, the look is easy to achieve if you keep a few principles in mind. Given that you will be moving from place to place, day to night, it’s best
to wear clothes that are comfortable yet stylish. For women, printed skirts and tops in natural fabrics work well as they hide wrinkles or unfortunate coffee or food stains. These can be matched with oversized blazers, perfect in cold destinations, paired with accessories like scarfs, jewellery, sunglasses, and cross-body bags. For men, a smart pure cotton shirt or polo, denim or pure cotton trousers are staples and will never go out of style. Add a smart linen or wool jacket in a bright colour, and this look can be matched for a formal dinner setting as well. With these basics, one can switch it up, mix and match or add layers for a more refined look. A durable coat made of 100% natural wool or a pure linen jacket is a must-have for both men and women.”
When it comes to newage fashion ethics, style alone is not enough for a modern traveller who is conscious in every sense. Designer Sandhya Raman says, “Classic apparel always lends itself to various body types and a brand that is about people, about diversity, about multicultural co-existence is always preferred. Some reversible jackets, shrugs, throws, wraps can be teamed up with the generic basics that most wardrobes hold. Also, the sporty silhouettes are timeless and can save a global traveller from being caught in the forecast dilemma.” While designer Dolly Jhunjhunwala wishes to see global travellers sporting ‘naturally comfortable’ looks. The designer adds, “While travelling, the most important thing is comfort. To sport a global traveller look one can opt for tailored slim-fit attire with a contrasting print to stand out, heels can be replaced with sneakers for better comfort while being trendy. If you’re headed somewhere cold, make sure to add a layer to the outfit with stylish outerwear like the clas
sic double-breasted coat paired with a tote bag. Trendy leather coats are my personal favourites. Taking inspiration from celebrities, one can also opt for an all-black outfit or denim on denim attire, the look can be completed with stylish sneakers or trendy leather loafers for a chic airport look.”
