Creating a wedge

As we enter the New Year, here are some fashion fads you can leave behind.

It was the year that took the fashion world by storm. But with the new year, we’re ready to welcome some new trends and wait for others to see themselves out. From sneakers, velvet and dungarees making a comeback, we do a rundown of trends that emerged in 2016 that made us think, ‘but why?’ and bid adieu only hoping they don’t claw their way back! The city’s most stylish, share their inputs on the trends they want to say goodbye to.

Leaving the classics like monochrome aside, celebrity stylist Sakshi Mehra talks about the trends she wouldn’t touch next year. “The one shoulder was overplayed this year. And I’m all for reinvention, but I’d leave the 80s behind. Also, please say goodbye to platformed and wedged sneakers and oversized chokers. The 80s were bad enough the first time around,” says the creative director of Project Bandi. “I think velvet is luxurious and adds instant glamour to the look. Velvet boots will make it to 2017 and with good reason,”she adds with conviction before giving us inputs on some celebs we should be on the lookout for, to keep up with trends. “I love that Ranveer Singh wears every single look with conviction, no matter how ridiculous. I like that he is unabashedly himself and isn’t apologetic. Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker are also always well-turned out - definitely trendsetters!”

It was the year of taking risks. Fashion is meant to be had fun with – some trends work and some don’t. “I know that runways were big on layering this year, but the slip over t-shirts are one 90s trend that can go back to where they came from,” says Aloka, a designer from the city. “I also think white sneakers are too overdone. They aren’t as exciting anymore. It’s now more about sneakers that are embellished, have emojis or logo patches on them. I think it’s also time we get done with sportswear. True, nostalgia resonated with a lot of people and the throwback 90s vibes will always be popular but it’s time we stopped looking like Will Smith in the Prince of Bel Air,” says the designer confidently.

It certainly was an inspirational year for style and beauty according to another stylist, Shweta Aherwar. “I think we need to say goodbye to wedge boots in the footwear. When it comes to apparel, I think it’s about time we are done with peplum tops. It has almost begun to look tacky now. Wrap dresses look like the next big thing for 2017. Another trend I think we should do away with, are excessively distressed denims where the jeans just look tattered now. We need to go back to styling denims minimally,” says the senior stylist. “One makeup trend I wish to never see again, is the weird coloured lipstick like purple and black. I think we need to stick to the classics like red, pink and coral,” she opines.
