IIIT-Hyderabad Hosts 1,200-Tree Plantation Drive with SGI Support
Green initiative backed by One Tree Planted and FedEx aims to restore urban ecosystems and inspire nationwide action

The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability by hosting a large-scale tree plantation drive on its 66-acre campus. A total of 1,200 trees were planted in collaboration with the Sustainable Green Initiative (SGI), with support from One Tree Planted USA and FedEx Corporation USA.
This initiative is a continuation of IIIT-Hyderabad’s long-standing green campus practices, which already include over 2,000 trees, rainwater harvesting, a smart water and electricity monitoring system, Wi-SUN-enabled smart street lighting, and a plastic-free campus. The partnership with SGI aligns seamlessly with the institute’s annual tree-planting exercise and environmental ethos.
SGI aims to restore Hyderabad's green cover, rebuild degraded ecosystems, and foster a culture of environmental accountability. The tree plantation at IIIT-H is part of SGI’s broader mission to reverse urban deforestation and promote ecological awareness in fast-growing cities.
“This event is not just about planting trees,” an SGI representative noted, “but about creating a model of environmental leadership that can be replicated by corporates, educational institutions, and citizen groups across India.”
Both IIIT-H and SGI expressed hope that this drive will inspire similar green restoration efforts beyond Hyderabad, encouraging a collective response to the climate crisis and rapid urbanization.
