Amrabad is 'very good'; Kawal in a spot: Tiger report

HYDERABAD: Amrabad tiger reserve has advanced to the 'Very Good' category, according to a report that Prime Minister Narendra Modi released on Sunday as he launched the commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger.

However, the “Status of Tigers Report 2022” said that the “local tiger population has become extinct in several areas, including tiger reserves like Kawal, Satkosia and Sahyadri.”

Amrabad received a score of 78.79 per cent in the Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) Report. Ten independent regional expert committees were formed to evaluate the country's 51 tiger reserves.

Amrabad was ranked 28. Nineteen tiger reserves were listed in the category of ‘Very Good’ category; the reserve was ranked 'Good' four years ago. In addition, the Kawal tiger reserve received a score of 74.24 per cent and was ranked 33rd in the 'Good' category.

The Nagarjunasagar tiger reserve (NSTR) in Andhra Pradesh did well in the terms of tiger population and was out of the 'Red Corridor' in the 2022 report, where it was placed in 2018.

The NSTR spreads over 3,296.31 square kilometres, Amrabad 2,611.39 sq km and Kawal is the smallest in the Telugu states at 2,015.44 sq. km.

The tiger population in Shivalik Hills and Gangetic Plains landscape had recorded a substantial increase with a total of 804 unique tigers being photographed, the “Status of Tigers Report 2022” said.
