Mining blasts, monkeys and birds posing menace to Kurnool airport

KURNOOL: The Uyyalwada Narasimha Reddy Kurnool Airport at Orvakal is facing problems relating to birds, animals, and mining blasts that have been carried out in its vicinity. The airport that has been operating flights for the past six months is connected to Chennai, Bengaluru, and Vishakapatnam.
The airport, situated at a distance of 25km from Kurnool, has been expanding with several real estate ventures coming up in its vicinity.
Airport director Vidyasagar and joint collector Srinivasulu reviewed the security situation and flight safety. The joint collector said food leftovers in the airport premises have posed a menace as birds fly in to get their share of the food and these have a high probability of hitting the aircraft during landings or takeoffs.
“Therefore, it has been decided not ban the throwing of food leftovers within a 10km vicinity of the runway. Even the movement of dogs, rabbits and other animals needs to be addressed.

The joint collector said a meeting is called with the Mandal officials to address these issues. Mining officials are not coming forward to identify the rock blasts of miners, it was noted.
The anti-hijacking systems are also to be kept in place in accordance with the standard operating procedures(SOP) of the Airports Authority of India, he said.
Real estate activity has picked up in the vicinity of the airport. The height of the high-rise constructions has to be kept within the maximum limits provided by the AAI. A meeting with Kurnool municipal commissioner, Kurnool urban development authority is also scheduled, the joint collector said.
He said no construction would be allowed near the airport unless online permission (No Objection certificate from AAI) is by owners obtained prior to the issuing of building permits.
