Army pitches in to clean Hussainsagar on World Environment Day

HYDERABAD: About 2,000 Army personnel from the Artillery Centre on Monday removed plastic waste from the Hussainsagar as part of a week-long initiative o mark World Environment Day under an Indian Army initiative ‘Olive Greens Defending Environment’.

Personnel of the Telangana and Andhra Sub Area (TASA) and training centres in Secunderabad and Hyderabad took part in several initiatives on the day. Units under TASA held awareness campaigns and community events, which started on May 29.

More than 15,000 soldiers and their families joined hands to undertake waste management, tree plantation drives, cycle rallies and plastic collection, including cleaning of lakes.

On Monday, the rank and file of 1 EME Centre in Secunderabad gathered in large numbers to spread awareness among citizens through a cycle rally, while more than 1,000 troops of AOC Centre and HQ TASA undertook a pledge to adopt sustainable practices.
