Karnataka: Rice for plastic campaign launched in Harekala panchayat

Mangaluru: In a bid to encourage people to reduce the use of plastic, Harekala Grama Panchayat, joined by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union, Jana Shikshana Trust, Dakshina Kannada District Administration, and other organizations, has launched an innovative campaign. Unlike the conventional plastic waste collection drives, the organizers gifted rice to those who collect 100 grams to 500 grams of plastic, as part of the initiative. Those who contributed over 500 grams were given 5 kg of rice and 10 kg of rice was given to those who delivered more than 1 kg of plastic waste.

The organisers distributed a total of 1,200 KG of rice in exchange for 210.52 kg of plastic.

Shaila, Executive Officer of Ullal Taluk Panchayat, stressed the need for such awareness campaigns across the taluk. She underscored the urgency of collective efforts to mitigate the detrimental impacts of plastic waste on the environment, especially in rural areas.

Srinivas Nayak Indaje, President of the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union, presided over the function.
