Ganesh Chaturthi is just around the corner, with festivities already underway. While devotees have been indulging in shopping for the festival, gearing up to welcome Bappa, preparations for the prasad have also started gaining momentum across sweet shops. However, you can also prepare prasad at home and simply opt for Bappa’s favourite – modak. Here are some easy modak recipes for Ganesh Chaturthi 2026.
Traditional ukadiche modak
To make traditional ukadiche modak, prepare a soft dough by cooking rice flour with hot water, a pinch of salt and a little ghee, then knead it until smooth. For the filling, cook grated fresh coconut with jaggery, cardamom and a little nutmeg until the mixture thickens. Shape your modak, fill it with the coconut-jaggery mixture, seal the top into the classic modak shape and steam them.
Fried modak
For fried modak, prepare a dough using refined flour or wheat flour, semolina, a pinch of salt, and ghee, adding water gradually to form a firm dough. Shape them in a similar manner and add the stuffing. Deep-fry the modaks on medium heat until they turn crisp and golden brown.
Chocolate modak
To make chocolate modak, heat condensed milk with milk powder and cocoa powder in a non-stick pan and cook on low heat until the mixture thickens and begins to leave the sides of the pan. Allow the mixture to cool slightly. Grease a modak mould with ghee, fill it with the chocolate mixture and press firmly to shape.
Mawa modak
Crumble fresh mawa and cook it on low heat in a thick-bottomed pan until soft and slightly aromatic. Add powdered sugar, cardamom powder, and a few strands of saffron soaked in warm milk, mixing well until the sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens. Let it cool and then knead lightly. Grease a modak mould with a little ghee, press the mixture into it, and unmould carefully.
