Diwali commemorates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

Bright decorations, colourful lights, and delicious sweets - Diwali is one of the most anticipated Indian celebrations of the year, a major religious festival for Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs worldwide.
The name 'Diwali' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'deepavali', where 'deepa' means 'diyas' (oil lamps) and 'avali' means 'row', translating to "row of lights".
During the festival, people clean their houses and decorate them with rows of oil lamps and other lights, making it "the festival of lights". It commemorates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.
Is Diwali on 20 or 21 October?
This year, Amavasya Tithi, the new moon day, begins at 3:44 p.m. on 20 October and ends at 5:54 p.m. on 21 October, hence the confusion about which day to celebrate. However, Drik Panchang says that the Pradosh Kaal, the best time to perform Lakshmi Puja (a significant part of the festival), is 5:46 p.m. to 8:18 p.m. on 20 October. Hence, the main Diwali celebrations will take place on Monday, 20 October.
