Tegra Monastery commemorates 34th birthday

Gaya: Tergar Monastery celebrates 34th birthday of 17th Karmapa.

Patna: Buddhist monks gathered at Tergar Monastery in Bodh Gaya to celebrate the 34th birthday of the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Thinley Dorje here on Wednesday.

The celebrations started the early morning when several children from the monastery gathered and prayed for the long life of their guru. Later, to make the celebrations more memorable, a special cake weighing 70 pounds was cut by the children at the monastery.

A feast was also organised in the monastery for all the children where they were treated to mouth-watering delicacies.

Talking about the celebrations, which takes place every year, Karmasonam Tapke, a Buddhist from Arunachal Pradesh said. "Every year we celebrate this day on a grand note. All the kids of the Tergar monastery gather and pray for the long life of our guru. Today, to mark the special day, we carried the photograph of our guru and circled around the monastery while chanting prayers for him."

Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Thinley Dorje is a claimant to the title of 17th Karmapa Lama. The Karmapa is head of the Karma Kagyu school, one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
