Hyderabad: Mangalurean families residing in the twin cities celebrated Christmas in advance, marking the silver jubilee of the Kanara Catholic Welfare Association. Comprising around 150 families, this community has maintained its native roots by organising events to foster connections among its members.
The celebration featured traditional Konkani songs accompanied by dance steps, lively Baila singing, and a delectable Mangalurean menu for lunch.
The youths have adopted a unique approach to Christmas celebrations in recent years. They dedicate this joyful season to visiting elders living alone in the city without children or those whose children reside in different places.
Dr Lovita V. Pereira, a resident of Sainikpuri, recalled, "As the smallest community in the twin cities, this year our plans include visits to orphanages, bringing the spirit of Christmas through carol singing, a Nativity play, a heartfelt message, cake cutting, and a shared dinner."
Capt. Alwyn Menezes (retd), president of the association, shared insights into the day-long event. The celebration commenced with a Mass at St Mary’s Chapel, Mornington Road, Trimulgherry, followed by a programme featuring a welcome dance performed by two little girls. Members exchanged their experiences in the city, reflecting on their ties to their native roots.
Capt. Menezes added, "With many families travelling or engrossed in festive preparations and parish activities during Christmas, the early celebrations provided us with the opportunity to come together as a community."
