KOZHIKODE: A group of young artists from Malabar, with the support of artists from across the country, will hold a painting camp ‘Varna Silakal’ at Gosayikkunnu, which has references in the late Punathil Kunjabdulla's ‘Smaraka Silakal’. The camp is a tribute to the writer, said organisers. ‘Varna Silakal’, a one-day painting camp, will be inaugurated by artist Sadu Aliyur on December 2 at Muttungal beach at 9 pm. Organised under the Kadathanadu Chithra Kala Parishad, the painting camp would feature live sketches, painting of characters of Punathil, and scenes from Gosayi, said Jagadeesh Palayat, secretary of the Parishad.
“The camp was planned with the blessings of Punathil, but he died suddenly, and we thought of arranging the camp as a tribute to him. The land, near Government College, Madappally, was a favourite spot of the writer and through his Smarakasilakal, the place name became eternal. Initially, the camp was planned to promote the place,” said Jagadeesh. Thirty artists from Nepal, Goa and Bengaluru are attending the one-day camp to be held at Gosayikkunnu and its premises. The paintings from the camp would also be exhibited there, said the organisers.
