Delhi rickshaw's interiors give lessons on India's feminist movement

When a rickshaw ride turns into a primer for Indian feminism.

Designer Kruttika Susarla chose an unusual canvas to honour women leaders of India: an auto rickshaw’s interiors. Her project – a joint initiative between Manas Foundation and Mumbai-based Taxi Fabric – was conceptualised when Susarla noticed the lack of awareness about the feminist movement in India.

She decided to focus on leaders like Iron Sharmila, Savitribai Phule, Bhanwari Devi, Soni Sori and women-led media organisation Khabar Lahariya for this project. Apart from illustrations, she even added short information pieces in both Hindi and English so that passengers of varied backgrounds can learn about the movement.

Luckily when the 25-year-old approached auto-driver Gagan with her idea, he immediately agreed. You can check out more of Susarla's work here.
