Snapshots of Galleria, the recently concluded annual exhibition of the Telangana Photographic Society.

The Telangana Photographic Society (TPS) organised its annual exhibition, Galleria, to showcase a selection of photographs by its members at the Indian Council For Cultural Relations (ICCR) Art Gallery, Ravindra Bharathi. The exhibition was inaugurated on August 19th to coincide with World Photography Day.

On display was the work of 41 photographers, ranging from nature, bird photography to street photography.

“We organise this event every year to provide photographers with an opportunity to display their talent. We also spread photographic knowledge by publishing articles in various photography magazines,” said Ashok Kandimalla, author and President of TPS.

“Hyderabad has many budding photographers. TPS not only gives them a stage to display their photographs, but also conducts seminars to enhance their talent,” said Prashant Manchikanti, member, photographer and convenor of Galleria.

“There is a lot of scope for bird and nature photography in and around the city, especially in the Ameenpur lake area,” added Dr Jagan Pannala, winner of 35 international awards and two international honours in the category of bird photography.

With the advent of new technology, it has become rather difficult to recognise photography as a form of art. Many now think they are a photographer, just because they own a professional camera.

“The camera is just a tool, one needs artistic expression to become a good photographer,” said Sathyaprasad Yachendra, a landscape photographer, known for his work on the Himalayas. He also conducted a seminar on landscape photography for all the artists present at the gallery.

The Society believes that photographs are no longer a way of just collecting memories but are also a strong medium of expression. When asked how photographs impact the society, C.S.V. Rao, a member-photographer said, “The impact a photograph leaves on one’s mind is everlasting. One can forget a well-orated speech or an article, but a well-captured photograph is always in people’s memory.”
