KOZHIKODE: For more than 100 residents of the government old-age home, Thursday evening was indeed a memorable one. They found solace in “Mozhiyum Mizhiyum”, a musical evening which was accompanied by painting at the old age home in Vellimadukunnu. It was organised by Abhaya Family Medical Centre (AFMC) under their initiative ‘Art in Medicine’. Art in Medicine is a project aimed at curbing health issues through art. “Art has the magical power to heal both physical and mental wounds. Its power is above any medicine. This is the second programme conducted by AFMC” said Ramesh U, Director of finance (AFMC).
Elderly people have no place in families because of the advent of nuclear families and busy life schedules. They are ignored and abandoned in such old age homes. This event was an enlightening and comforting experience for them. “We yearn for care and affection. It transcends any medicine. We feel special when such programmes are conducted. It provides relaxation and has a soothing effect” said Meenakshi amma, an inmate , with eyes sparkling in joy.
The songs were sung by the organisers themselves and the paintings were by artist Ratnavalli. “I am a physician and a musician too. I have treated almost 15 lakh patients and the healing power of music is marvellous” said Dr. Mehroof Raj T P, coordinator of the programme ,who sung Hindustani songs which was a captivating experience for the listeners. The paintings depicted serene imagery creating a tranquil atmosphere along with music.
