Kozhikode: Block panchayat opens doors for art

Construction of new art gallery in Vadakara starts today.

Kozhikode: The Uralungal Labour Service Cooperative Society will start work on the new art gallery at Vadakara under the block panchayat on Monday. An old building, used earlier as the office of the block panchayat president, is being renovated and is slated to be opened on October 10.

The new gallery will be a sub-centre of the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi art gallery.

A folklore museum having a collection of Theyyams of the area is also planned alongside the gallery.

A sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi by sculptor Pavithran Eramala is being readied to be unveiled in front of the gallery. The date of the inauguration has been planned in connection with the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations, said Jagadeesh Palayatt, convener of the art gallery committee. Block panchayat president Kottayil Radhakrishnan is the committee chairman.

It is for the first time in the state that a block panchayat has taken the initiative for an art gallery. The campaign for the art gallery was started years ago by a group of artists and art teachers from the area.

They wanted the permanent display of paintings of deceased artists, work for the betterment of the artists, apart from regular workshops and artist camps in the art gallery.
