Only a handful of authors make it to the top: Ankita Kapoor
San Diego based Indian author Ankita Kapoor worked as an arts coordinator in a popular art gallery and a lifestyle journalist for two years. Her debut book Writer’s Block traces the journey and obstacles faced by a young girl Aarohi who switched her job from being a talented arts coordinator in a metropolitan city to an insecure journalist with a multinational publishing conglomerate.
Which genre draws you the most as a reader and a writer?
Fiction.
Best opening line that you have ever read?
Our lives are defined by opportunities, even the ones we miss. — The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald).
One fictional character close to your heart and why?
Bridget Jones from the Diary of Bridget Jones is one character I really admire as her writing style as well as the stories of our life culminate in the same manner. She loves gossiping just like Aarohi, the protagonist in Writer’s Block.
Who among the pantheon of writers (past/present) would you like to have coffee with?
I would love to have a chat with Gregory David Roberts and Lauren Weisbergerover over a cup of coffee.
What is your antidote for writer’s block
The key is to pen down new ideas and thoughts everyday or regularly as soon as it strikes your mind. Once you feel that you have sufficient material, then you can weave all of them together as a story format after some efforts and of course, numerous re-writings.
How can new/budding writers prevent rejection from turning into dejection?
Rejection is a cycle that every budding author goes through before tasting success. It’s a cut throat competition in the literary world today and only a handful of authors make it to the top. Do not let it undermine your spirit and your thought process. If you keep working on your writing style everyday, sooner or later, you will surely achieve success.
