Sketches of life

Combining his love for sketching and movies, instagrammer Karthik Abhiram's project will soon be shown at an exhibition.

What does one do when they can’t decide what they love more — movies or sketching? Well, Karthik Abhiram from the city blended the two interests and started the project Daily-moviesketch on Instagram. Since April 2016, he has sketched one movie character every day for three months and now, his works will be displayed in the city at a show called the ART Exhibition.

Karthik has always been fond of acting. “I was forever fascinated with movies. But, I started sketching as just another hobby when I was in Class VI. Over time, it grew into a bigger passion,” says Karthik, who used his free time to sketch characters from books and movies that he really liked. His first were characters from the Archies comics, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

“I kept sketching as a hobby even as I grew up, but it wasn’t until last year that I decided to work on this project,” says Karthik, who works as an HR personnel at an IT firm.

Since Karthik’s work commitments take up a lot of his time, he couldn’t participate in the Inktober challenge (where one sketches every day in October). “I have been planning to work on this challenge since long, so last year, I decided to make time and sketch daily,” he says.

Karthik started sketching for his daily project in April last year and continued to create art every day for three months. “After that, I couldn’t create artworks every day. If I did miss my daily target, I used to make sure to put up work once in two days,” he explains. It takes him anywhere between 45 to 90 minutes to finish one art piece.

Now, after 256 sketches, Karthik will be displaying 12 to 15 of his works at the exhibition. “All of my sketches are characters from movies or trailers that I have watched, because I need to find a connect with a character to sketch them,” says the artist whose original sketches will be showcased along with works of another artist.
