Expressing herself through dance

Since she started performing, Kavya has tried her luck in popular reality shows.

Since she started dancing at the age of just four, Kavya G. has not been able to find another way to express herself better. Winning the Indian classical dance competition (solo - Mohiniyattam) in the inter-university championship held in Chandigarh, representing Kerala University, Kavya has announced her entry in the best possible way.

Competitive spirit really took over the city of Chandigarh, says Kavya. “The competition was fun and very tight. There was no genre classification or different classical art forms. The category was Indian classical dance and there were Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam dancers competing with each other. I did solo Mohiniyattam. It was a great moment to win the elite national championship.”

Kavya, who is a final-year BCom student at Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvanantha puram, has performed both classical dance and cinematic dance in more than 250 stages across the country. She says learning Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattom has helped her become the person she is now.

Since she started performing, Kavya has tried her luck in popular reality shows. “It was actually a bit tricky for me to adapt myself to the dance forms that reality shows and stage shows demand. But I have got the base in dancing and it helped me. After appearing in one of the dance reality shows, I acted in three short films.” Acting, according to Kavya, was a whole new experience for her.

The biggest surprise for her came in the form of the opportunity to do the lead role in Chilappol Penkutty, a movie directed by Prasad Nooranad, which is expected to release in March. “The movie deals with a story that is socially relevant and I play one of the lead characters. I play the character of a girl who is a simple, innocent and easy going,” smiles Kavya.

Kavya says she likes to act, but the first priority is always dance. She wants to leave a mark of her own in the field. “I will definitely be happy to act again, but I would like to give priority to dance as I owe a lot to it and hope to continue dancing as long as I can.”
