Goan artist paints Kozhikode buildings
KOZHIKODE: When Sandesh Gaundalkar, a watercolour artist from Goa arrived in Kozhikode on Saturday, he had plans to feel the monsoon and capture it on his canvas in a live demonstration. When the clouds vanished, he took to the streets of Vadakara and saw the ancient houses there. He felt that they need to be painted and kept for the generations to come.
Under the aegis of Kadathanad Chitrakala Parishad, Mr Sandesh had a live demonstration, where he painted the archaeologically-significant buildings, Thazhe Angadi, Lokanarkavu, Thacholi Manikoth, Sidha Samajam, sandbanks, Mayyazhi, Eramala island, Kannimada Bridge, etc.
“I don’t understand why the people of Kerala go after the European architecture when they have beautiful models to follow here. Even this is the same situation in my native, Goa. I thought preserving the lively pictures of these significant houses and bazaars for the future generations,” said Mr Sandesh.
After completing his B.F.A. in applied art from the Goa College of Art – Goa University, he underwent training in animation & post production from WKS, Mumbai. He then turned to watercolour and currently he is an assistant professor at MIT, Pune. “After painting the traditional houses and streets, I’m going back to Goa. But will be back soon to paint the monsoon,” the artist said.
