For Art's sake!

The vibrant art scene in the city saw three special events unfold this past week... of which the Gurudas Shenoy exhibition is a must-see...

“Painting from nature is not copying the object; it is realising one’s sensations.”
— Paul Cézanne

It was a sensational weekend of art events in namma Bengaluru. Events that celebrated some of the finest artists, and paid tribute to decades of oeuvres. Three events in the city impacted art lovers who went out in numbers to both witness phenomenal artistry, and in one event, also try their hand at an artistic form which has stayed in the shadows of contemporary art — Cartooning. The first event was at an art fair held at a prominent mall in the city. It showcased some phenomenal oeuvres by senior artists from different parts of the country. Some stellar works that are part of decades of dedication by Gurudas Shenoy, Viipta Kapadia, Balan Nambiar and others were on display.

Balan Nambiar’s sculptures have always been appreciated for their sheer magnitude and size. His enamel works are equally brilliant. One artist who has seen it all and has continued to carve his own legacy is Gurudas Shenoy. Any art lover who is well-versed with the art scene in Bengaluru will vouch for the work of renowned artist Gurudas Shenoy. His work has always had a certain aura about it, and with time, it has only gotten better.

The art fair displayed some of the most magnificent works by the artist, and one particular artwork at the ground floor was a massive one, a tribute to the artist’s seamless way of creating abstract landscapes. His excellent use of oil colour and masterful bold strokes with a keen understanding of how to utilise space, makes Gurudas Shenoy one of the finest artists of the current generation. Despite all his success, Shenoy has always stayed humble, and his wife Amita Shenoy has always been his pillar of strength. The works on display only show a glimpse of his masterful strokes.

The other two art events were a tad different. Artmantram organised a Cartoon Easy Draw Workshop at Cubbon Park where senior artist Sridhar Comaravalli, one of the finest cartoonists in the city trained art lovers of different ages into drawing cartoons. He said, “The Easy Draw event had a great impact on youngsters as they discovered easy ways to draw with just numerals and alphabets. I taught them step by step how to draw simple things with just numerals and alphabets.’’

The third event was the much-awaited Art Park that saw a stunning ensemble of artists like SG Vasudev, veteran artist Krishna Setty, Shirley Mathew and others. It is heartening to see the art scene in Bengaluru continue to flourish. Gurudas Shenoy’s show is on till November 28.
