A poetic symphony

Climate change is a serious issue, which is being addressed through this local play, Under Pressure.

We’ve all seen environmentalists, nature lovers and others hosting campaigns and spreading awareness about saving the earth from succumbing to climate change. However, here is a group of artistes from The Visual Representation, who are spreading this message through theatre.

‘Powerful, Intimate, Urgent’ – with these three words defining this performance, the artistes are all set to perform this evening at the Unlimited Space in JP Nagar. The performers include Aditya Garg, Deepika Chauhan and Asha Ponikiewska and artist director Aruna Ganesh Ram.

Aditya Garg, writer and theatre artiste for the play Under Pressure explains why he chose climate change as their theme, “The world has been aware of the issue of climate change from decades but the movement never quite got the media buzz or momentum it has now, the urgency to respond is real. Theatre as a medium is designed to reflect the times we live in and there’s no better time than today to make the world aware of this imminent danger”

The performance presents perspectives of the policy maker, the rag picker and the environmentalist with a sensory montage. To convey its message, the show uses a combination of physical theatre, movements, storytelling and poetry.

The team has been recently focusing on several human related topics. Aditya says, “We are currently making work in the space of environment, gender identity and food. The common ground would be that all of our work is devised which means that there’s no script in place and we have to design the performance from ground up through research, workshops and explorations in the rehearsal room.”

Speaking about their selling point, Aditya says, “Over the last few years, physical theatre has evolved into a global phenomenon. The interdisciplinarity allows for various forms of dance, poetry, movement, puppetry, martial arts, circus arts and almost everything to come together. This provides the work with depth and allows for collaboration between different kinds of artists.”
