The artist, who is showcasing her work at Gallery Time and Space, gave us insight on her work and upcoming projects.
Oman, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are just some of the places where Esme’s artwork has been showcased. The artist, who has travelled far and wide and has also learnt different forms of art, is back in the country after 45 years! “We used to visit Bengaluru every year, but we had to finally come back. Our roots are strong here” Esme says.
Twenty five of Nune’s paintings are being featured at the gallery this week. “It took me around five years to complete the entire set,” says the artist sounding content. “When we were in Europe, I was struck by the Byzantine art that was most dominant there. I had always been using oil or water colours in my paintings and was fasinated and inclined to learn this new form. Then I met Kozei, an art teacher and Holocaust survivor and studied the technique under her” continues the artist who’s paintings have a subtle inclusion of gold-leaf, inspired by the Byzantine era.
Nunes’ interest in art began soon after she got married. “I studied science in Mount Carmel College and after graduation, worked at a laboratory in Mumbai. After I got married, my husband and I moved to Singapore where I used to paint a lot in my free time. That’s when my husband suggested that I take up a course to learn art. So while my children were studying in school, I was learning too,” says the artist who has learnt multiple forms of art from different parts of the world.
“I learnt print making in Germany and also attended workshops in Dubai held by artists hailing from America,” says Esme who is all set to showcase her artwork at the Museum of Religious Art in Goa, at the end of this year.
