Sara Hussain’s tribute to Sarah Cohen

Cohen, who was fighting memory loss for some time, was 96.

Artist Sara Hussain, who has her studio at Mattancherry, paid a tribute to the late Sarah Cohen, the oldest Kerala Jew who passed away two days ago, by sculpting Cohen’s portrait in synthetic air dry clay. Known for her knife works, Sara made Cohen’s portrait too using knife. “It is a very small one that can be held in our palm,” says Sara, who did it on an impulse.

Cohen, who was fighting memory loss for some time, was 96. She lived at the narrow lane to the Paradesi synagogue in Mattancherry, and had a stall selling embroidered souvenirs attached to her home. “I don’t know her personally, but have seen her on streets many times. I have talked to her, too. When I heard about her demise, I felt like doing this,” says Sara.
