Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum is a romcom without romance: Nalan Kumarasamy
Nalan Kumarasamy, whose last outing was the blockbuster Soodhu Kavvum, is back with Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum. Expectations are running high for this official remake of Korean film My Dear Desperado. Says Nalan, “This film is a romcom without any romance in it. I’d ask the audience not to expect an unexplored genre like my earlier movie. I want to make it clear that this film is a romantic drama with humour interlaced. But yes, the narration will be unique. Vijay Sethupathi will appear to be his usual bubbly, innocent self.”
We ask him if Vijay’s character resembles the earlier film Naanum Rowdy Thaan... “Not really! He plays Kathir, the henchman of a local councillor. He excels at any job that is given to him. Though his boss trusts him, Vijay does not get due recognition. I am sure his character would be loved by people,” he smiles. On choosing M’town girl Madonna Sebastian he says, “My friend Alphonse Putharen who made Premam suggested Madonna and I called her for an audition. I didn’t watch the movie then. In fact, there were many other women to choose from at the audition, but Madonna amazed me with her spirited performance. She fitted the role of Yazhini, which I had conceived for the script.”
“We shot the film in and around Chennai. The moment romance sets in, the movie comes to an end,” he tells us. Speaking about music composer Santhosh Narayanan, he says the songs are another highpoint in the movie. “There’s an unconventional approach in Santhosh’s music, which I am fond of! His tunes are usually quirky, and here also it is no different,” he concludes.
