Karnataka: Spoken English lessons for students in Government hostels

About 1.20 lakh students residing in 2,408 hostels (Pre-Matric and Post Matric) in the state will benefit from the programme

Mangaluru: Karnataka government will launch Spoken English class and personality development course for the students residing in Government Hostels from this year.

Most of the students residing in the hostels run by the Backward Class Welfare and Social welfare Departments are from rural areas, coming from financially backward families. While many are very good at studies, they find it difficult to converse in English due to lack of training. To help them, the state government has decided to introduce spoken English lessons this year.

“The government has decided to launch spoken English and personality development classes to help the poor students in Karnataka. About 1.20 lakh students residing in 2,408 hostels (Pre-Matric and Post Matric) in the state will benefit from this programme. We have set aside Rs 5 crore for the project,” Backward Class and Social Welfare Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary told Deccan Chronicle.

The government will identify and appoint eligible teachers from government or private schools by paying them an honorarium.

“The classes will be after the school hours. We will shortly decide on how many classes to be held every week,” the minister added.
