OU students’ electric scooter wins national contest

Ten students of electrical and mechanical engineering departments, under the guidance of Prof. V. Uma Maheshwar, designed the vehicle

Hyderabad: An electric scooter designed and fabricated by students of Osmania University College of Engineering (OUCE) won the first prize at Dr G. Padmanabham Memorial SAE India Electric Two Wheeler Design Competition, in Chennai.

Ten students of electrical and mechanical engineering departments, under the guidance of Prof. V. Uma Maheshwar, faculty adviser, SAE Collegiate Club, designed and fabricated the vehicle that they named Eco Fiets-2.0. Work on the vehicle started a year ago. The students designed the vehicle from scratch, using computer aided analysis before taking up the fabrication.

The competition was held on October 17 and 18 at SRM University, Chennai.

The design for the vehicle was created using a variety of 3D design software. In the contest, the team scored 172/190 marks for design. The single-seater and can reach a top speed of 60 km per hour. The vehicle is propelled by a 48V lithium-ion battery.

A technical inspection of the vehicle was carried out on the first day by eminent industrial experts. On the second day, the Eco Fiets-2.0 was subjected to performance tests like brake test, acceleration test, range test, gradeability test, bump test and manoeuverability test. The vehicle successfully qualified in all the above tests.

The Eco Fiets-2.0 has bagged the first prize of Rs 10,000 in the best presentation category. Judges appreciated the vehicle’s features which are consumer-friendly. Prof. Uma Maheshwar Vanamala, faculty adviser, was also awarded the best faculty adviser.
