Indian Army Jawan From Odisha Dies by Suicide in J&K, Family Blames Marital Discord

The deceased, identified as Suresh Biswal of Malpura village under Kamakhyanagar police limits in Dhenkanal district, had been serving in the Indian Army for the past 15 years

Bhubaneswar: An Indian Army jawan from Odisha died by suicide while on duty in Jammu & Kashmir on Monday evening, allegedly blaming his wife, younger brother, and in-laws for the extreme step.

The deceased, identified as Suresh Biswal of Malpura village under Kamakhyanagar police limits in Dhenkanal district, had been serving in the BSF for the past 15 years. Though originally from Odisha, he had been residing in Anantnag.

According to sources, Biswal had returned home on leave just nine days ago and had only recently rejoined his posting in Jammu & Kashmir. On Monday, while on duty, he reportedly sent a message to his mother explaining the reasons for his decision, then spoke to her over the phone before using his service rifle to shoot himself.

In her statement, his mother Kadambini Biswal claimed that ongoing marital discord, along with disputes between her elder daughter-in-law and younger son, had deeply distressed Suresh and pushed him towards the fatal act.

The BSF has informed the family, and his mortal remains are expected to reach Kamakhyanagar on Tuesday. Suresh is survived by his wife and seven-year-old daughter.

Kamakhyanagar police inspector Ashish Kumar Jena said preliminary information about the incident had been received, and a detailed investigation would begin once the body arrives in the village.
