Kerala IAS officer lures public with biryani to clean lake

Volunteers cleaned up the 14-acre lake and were rewarded with a plate of Malabar biryani.

Kozhikode: Kozhikode IAS officer and district collector, Prashanth Nair, is famous in Kerala for coming up with unique campaigns to increase public engagement with the district administration. He is back in news for managing to get the public to clean a dirty lake by themselves in exchange for a mouthful plate of biryani.

Many people took up the officer’s offer and volunteered to clean up a 14-acre lake in Koyilandi, which was filled with mud, dirt and water hyacinth. Prashant took to his Facebook page to announce that people finished the task of cleaning the water body with success and that the feat ‘was not easy’.

“Congratulations to all the volunteers who got together this morning to clean up the Pisharikavu lake in Koyilandy. Cleaning up a 57,000 square meter water body is not a small deal!,” he posted on his Facebook page. The post immediately got more than thousand shares and over seven thousand likes.

The volunteers were rewarded with some delicious Malabar biryani for their efforts, the money for which was used from the drought prevention fund of the district administration.
