We'll review tax suggestions, says Arun Jaitley

The committee had recommended for a separate budget allocation to ensure a time-bound tax refund.

New Delhi: Finance minister Arun Jaitley said on Monday that the government is looking into the recommendations of the Parthasarathi Shome committee for simplifying tax administration.

“The Shome committee report has given several recommendations which we are at a very advanced stage of looking into. It has suggested certain reforms in tax administration,” the minister said.

The committee had recommended for a separate budget allocation to ensure a time-bound tax refund and a passbook scheme for TDS (Tax Deduction at Source). It recommended against setting blind revenue target in budget saying it “causes unjust pressure on good taxpayers”.

It had recommended abolition of the post of revenue secretary and merger of CBDT and CBEC. It had also said that the present dispute management structure should be converted into a separate vertical function so that the tax collection functions do not influence the resolution of disputes, which tends to occur at present.
