Mosquito menace: Meet puts corporation on mat

Mayor Soumini Jain said that possibility to find out an expert agency to conduct a scientific study will be probed.

Kochi: The City Corporation which miserably failed in addressing the ever increasing mosquito menace in the city is planning to conduct one more scientific study to permanently resolve the menace, the latest in the series.

During a council meeting on Friday, Mayor Soumini Jain said that possibility to find out an expert agency to conduct a scientific study will be probed.

Councillors cutting across political affiliation have raised the issue and criticised the civic body’s failure in addressing the menace. “Life has become unbearable due to mosquitoes and the parasites reach even the 12th or 15th floor of buildings,” councillors said. “Infants, aged and sick people are the worst hit. Even morning walk and evening walk is not possible.”

As most of the councillors raised doubts over the efficacy of the chemical used for spraying, Ms Jain said that the vector control experts have certified it as the best product available. According to the Mayor, the one month cleaning campaign - Clean Kochi Mission, to be launched on January 25 will also focus on drain cleaning and mosquito eradication.

The Mayor added that fogging will be intensified using five machines while chemical spraying is continuing as per schedule.

The Mayor and the ruling bench have to face the heat of the decision to approve the multi level parking projects at Edappally and Kacheripady on PPP basis.

Opposition leader K.J Antony and other councillors objected the project alleging it as a move to sell Corporation assets to private firms.
