Japanese Coast Guard ship berths at Chennai Port

On its arrival the ship was welcomed by the Coast Guard Region (East) at a colorful ceremony with band in attendance.

Chennai: The Japanese Coast Guard Ship, ECHIGO, berthed at Chennai Port on Tuesday morning to participate in the XV joint exercise “SAHYOG — KAIJIN” between Indian Coast Guard and Japan Coast Guard scheduled on Friday.

One of the main highlights of this exercise includes recreation of the scenario where hijacking of a merchant vessel and its subsequent rescue was conducted in a combined coast guard operation by both countries in 1999.

On its arrival the ship was welcomed by the Coast Guard Region (East) at a colorful ceremony with band in attendance and children from Kalki Renganathan Montfort Public School, Parambur. Senior Coast Guard officers were also present during the welcome ceremony.

ECHIGO is commanded by Capt Toshiya Mikuni and has 44 crew members on board. During the period of stay, the Japanese delegation will be calling on important dignitaries in Chennai. A friendly volleyball match between Indian Coast Guard and Japan Coast Guard will also be played on Thursday.

As a part of cross training Japanese Ship Crew will visit ICGS Samudra Paheredar and ICG personnel will visit Japan Coast Guard Ship on Wednesday and Thursday. Visit to maritime rescue co-ordination centre / regional operation centre has also been planned for Japan Coast Guard Ship Crew on the same days. The ship will depart Chennai on Jan. 16.
