What is the process to apply for Canada Express Entry program?

Per the 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan, approximately 100,000+ people will get a visa through the Express Entry system every year

Introduced by the federal government in 2015 in lieu of “first come, first served” process, Canada Express Entry system is fast becoming the primary source for skilled worker migration to Canada.

Per the 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan, approximately 100,000+ people will get a visa through the Express Entry system every year.

Express Entry System

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses the Express Entry system to process applications received via three of Canada’s federal economic immigration programs for skilled workers.

A part of the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is aligned with the Express Entry, yet the candidates have to be qualified under any one of the three federal programs to enter the Express Entry pool.

The three federal programs are:

Canada Express Entry system is simply an option via which the Canadian Immigration selects candidates for permanent residence visa.

Some of the program highlights are:

  • Open throughout the year.

  • No cap on the number of applicants.

  • Web-based registration and application process.

  • Your profile is examined based on points and placed in the applicant pool. Points are determined using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

  • Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR is sent to the highest point holders.

  • ITAs issued as per the Annual Immigration Level.

The system’s goal is to identify candidates who have the highest probability of success after migrating to Canada. The points scale has a maximum score of 1200 on which the candidate and their spouse (if any) are evaluated:

  • Age

  • Education

  • Language skills

  • Canadian and other work experience

  • Skills transferability

  • Online registration CAD: 300 non-refundable

Once you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) from Canada Immigration, you have only 60 days to file an application.

Express Entry – Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

For professionals with at least one year of skilled work experience.

The first step in the FSW stream’s application process is to submit your profile along with documents like – language test results, educational qualification assessment report, and passport or travel document.

Upon receiving an ITA for the Canadian permanent residence, you need to submit a more robust application which includes additional identity papers, reference letters, medical examination results, and police clearance certificate.

The minimum requirements to apply under the Express Entry as a skilled worker are –

  • In the last 10 years, have at least one year of uninterrupted full-time (or comparable part-time) work experience in a skilled occupation.

  • Possess a post-secondary education that can be assessed against Canadian standards with an Educational Credential Assessment.

  • On an approved language test, score a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) seven in either English or French

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Allows applicants who have worked for at least a year in Canada to immigrate permanently.

The program highlights are:

  • Applications are processed quickly (within 3 to 4 months) since the documentation required is minimal

  • Unlike the FSTP and FSWP categories, CEC candidates needn’t show proof of settlement funds

  • Remember that if your CRS score is below the cut-off required to receive an invitation, you might not receive an ITA.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

The Canadian government initiated the Federal Skilled Trades Class program to address the labour shortages across the country in many skilled trades’ occupations.

The program highlights are:

  • Have a minimum of two years full-time work experience (or the equivalent in part-time) in the skilled trade during the five previous years;

  • Hold a full-time offer letter from up to two Canadian employers OR have a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade from a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.
