Afghanistan: Kabul blast takes 90 lives, leaves more than 450 wounded

- The bomber drove into Kabul's heavily guarded diplomatic quarter during the morning rush, leaving behind a bloody chaos and destruction. Most of the casualties were civilians, including women and children, but the dead also included Afghan security guards. (Photo: AFP)
- The explosion took place at the peak of Kabul's rush hour when roads are packed with worktime commuters. It appeared to have gone off close to a busy intersection in the Wazir Akbar Khan district but Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry, did not have a more precise location. - Last month, the Afghan Taliban announced the beginning of their spring offensive, promising to build their political base in the country while focusing military assaults on the international coalition and Afghan security forces.
- Afghan security forces and helicopters were deployed over the neighbourhood. The number of casualties increased rapidly after the blast.
- Bodies and injured people were seen in the area. Some women were seen screaming for the lost relatives at the site of explosion.
- The German Embassy, the Foreign Ministry and the Presidential Palace are all in the area, as are the British and the Canadian embassies. The Chinese, Turkish and Iranian embassies are also located there. People ran to the hospital near the site of a suicide attack.
- The blast smashed windows of the buildings nearby and a huge plume of smoke could be seen spiralling over the area near the presidential palace and other foreign embassies in the Afghan capital.
- Houses hundreds of metres away from the blast site were damaged and windows and doors blown off their hinges.
- Reports said the massive explosion close to the German embassy wounded or killed 80 and wounded over 350 people.
