The World Press Photo Awards honour some of the best photos clicked for the news industry during the year, across categories and genres.- Associated Press photographer Burhan Ozbilici won the 2017 World Press Photo competition for this image captured in the moments before and after Mevlut Mert Altintas, an off-duty Turkish policeman, drew a handgun and shot Andrei Karlov at a photo exhibition.
- Felipe Dana, came third in the Spot News - Singles category in the 2017 World Press Photo competition for his image of an explosion in Mosul.A car bomb exploded next to Iraqi Special Forces armoured vehicles as they advance towards Islamic State held territory in Mosul, Iraq.
- Abd Doumany of Agency France-Presse, won second prize in the Spot News, Singles category for this photo of a Syrian girl crying out as a wounded child lies next to her at a makeshift hospital. She had been injured in reported government airstrikes on the rebel-held town of Douma, east of Damascus, Syria.
- Jamal Taraqai, European Press Agency, won first prize in the Spot News, Singles category for this picture of lawyers helping their injured colleagues after a bomb explosion in Quetta, Pakistan. Seventy people were killed when a bomb exploded outside a civil hospital where a crowd of lawyers and journalists had gathered to mourn Bilal Anwar Kasi, a senior lawyer who had been assassinated hours earlier.
- Mathieu Willcocks won third prize in the Spot News, Stories category, for this photo titled Mediterranean migration' that shows two men panicking and struggling in the water during their rescue. Their rubber boat was in distress and deflating quickly on one side, tipping many migrants in the water. They were quickly reached by rescue swimmers and brought to safety.
- Ameer Alhalbi, Agency France-Presse, won second prize in the Spot News, Stories, category of the contest for this image that shows Syrian civil defense volunteers, known as the White Helmets, rescuing a boy from the rubble following a reported barrel bomb attack on the Bab al-Nairab neighborhood of Aleppo.
