Now that you have your subjects in toy-mode' or miniaturised, play around till you get your perfect shots.
We suggest boosting the colours marginally which will help bring the subject to the fore. Other than this, saturation, contrast and vibrancy are other settings that you can experiment with for a pronounced effect.
If you are taking the photo from within your default camera app, you need to select the plane of focus and depending on the app, adjust the amount of blur you desire for your photo.
On your smartphone, look for a blur effect filter, usually marked as toy-mode' or miniature effect, on the camera. You could download a few tilt-shift featuring camera apps too. After you have selected the filter, adjust the exposure to avoid blowing out highlights and or losing details in any shadow area.
Tilt-shift tends to work best for photos that are taken from a higher ground. Try taking shots from roof-tops whilst looking down to the ground. The higher you are, the better the effect turn out. Just make sure your subject appears small in the scene and do ensure there is enough light available to take the sharpest shot.
The effect can be achieved by using a dedicated tilt-shift lens for your DSLR. However, you can fake the effect using various computer software, or even camera apps on your smartphone.
Tilt-shift is a kind of photography trick that manipulates the photo with focus and depth-of-field (DOF) to produce images that have a selective focus, often making the world look like a bunch of miniatures. This effect gives the photo a toy-world' feel.
