More than 1.7 lakh people affected by floods in Assam

28 relief camps have been set up by district administrations in the affected regions for the 5,435 people staying there.
The question is how many more people will have to die before the administration wakes up to the need to manage these drains better and protect them from the clutches of vested interests.(Representational Image)- So far more than 16,000 animals and nearly 12,000 poultry, vital to rural economy, have been destroyed in Morigaon and Golaghat districts.
- Mobile medical clinics have also been set up in areas adjacent to the flood affected regions.
- Four relief camps have been set up at Ghorpholia and Dhekorgorah area where relief materials are being distributed, Deputy Commissioner in charge Jorhat, Roshni Aparanjita Korati, said.
- Six State Disaster Management Response Force motorboats have been pressed into service to rescue people from the marooned villages, the sources said.
- Besides severe erosion at several places, a number of roads, embankments and other infrastructure facilities have been damaged in many districts, ASDMA added.
- Standing crops in over 14,000 hectares of agricultural land were submerged by the deluge.

- ASDMA said Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat in Jorhat and Dhubri, Dikhow at Sivasagar, Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, Jia Bhorali at N T Road Crossing in Sonitpur district, Puthimari at N H road crossing in Kamrup, Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta and Sankosh in Dhubri district.
- One person died in the flood in Sivasagar district, which is hit by the calamity along with Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Morigaon, Jorhat and Dhemaji, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
- The Jorhat district administration in upper Assam has sounded high alert in areas along the river Bhogdoi as it is flowing above danger level.
More than 1.7 lakh people remain affected by floods in Assam, where one person has died and 238 villages in six districts have submerged in the deluge.
