People of 30 villages unite to fill the barrage they built
The viillagers of Jamkhandi and Athani in Karnataka are do-it-yourself dam builders. They don't wait for the government to build projects. They do it themselves.
Back in 1990, they built their own dam by contributing their own money with contributions ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 100. It cost them just 89 lakh then. Now they are doing it again to lift water to the barrage.
They plan to install 25 pumps of 100 hp each. They will again raise their own funds and do their own labour.
First up, they have taken up repair work of the barrage gates that were damaged in the devastating flood last year. They are removing weeds, thorny plants and silt.
The aim is to lift water from the backwaters of the Almatti to fill their barrage, called Shrama Bindu Sagar. It will increase the capacity of water and tide them over the summer.
This is the dream of Jamkhandi and Athani. A barrage filled with water, and no need to beg any government.
