Need to improve techniques: Terry Walsh

“The problem starts right from childhood and is not something that can be dealt with overnight, said Terry Walsh.

New Delhi: With the Hockey World League Final around the corner, national coach Terry Walsh believes the team has to improve techniques in order to emerge as a more effective force.

The Australian, who put the Indian team through a rigorous training session at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Friday evenĀing, ahead of the HWL Final to be held in the capital from January 10 to 18, said, “The problem starts right from childhood and is not something that can be dealt with overnight.

We have significant problems with our goal scoring technique. I have not met an Indian yet who does not swing from up here (indicates above his shoulder). But also, I have not seen a really good goal scorer who swings from there,” Walsh.

“This problem is not just only in the national team, it is a part of a process and runs through the whole system. It is the systematic change that has to take place from the grassroot level. That’s what we have to do in the coming months.

“We have talented players who can get into any team in the world but we are lacking in our ability to understand the technical and tactical matters of the sport,” he added.
