11 tribal girls in AP hostel allege sexual abuse by tutor

Hyderabad: Eleven minor tribal girls residing in a students' hostel run by an NGO in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh, have alleged sexual assault by their tutor for the past five months, police said on Saturday.

According to Nalgonda Superintendent of Police T. Prabhakar Rao, a case wason Friday registered against accused R. Harish following a complaint by the victims.

Harish, who was appointed by the NGO management was also staying in the same hostel in Enemeedha Tanda under Tungaturthy Gram Panchayat, where the abuse happened. He allegedly threatened the girls and sexually abused them, a police official said.

As many as 78 students comprising boys and girls are staying in the hostel.

"Harish was on leave for three days last week, when girls came out and informed their kin about their trauma. We immediately swung into action and sent the girls for medical examination. All the children are below 13 years of age. We formed special teams to catch the accused," Rao told PTI.

However, sources in the department said that police have already nabbed Harish and are questioning him.

The couple - Srinivas and Sarita - who are running the NGO will also be questioned on any violations in running the hostel, the police official said. As of now, a case under relevant sections of protection of children from sexual assault besides cheating, has been registered, he added.

Meanwhile, a police official from Nalgonda district said that a case under Nirbhaya Act was being filed against the accused. A social organisation has also filed a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission demanding justice for victims.

New Delhi: A 33-year-old Polish woman was allegedly raped by a cab driver after he had offered her a ride on the Mathura-Delhi highway, police said.

The woman, who is a lord Krishna devotee, alleged in her complaint that she was raped by the driver who offered her a lift on the highway on the midnight of January 2.

According to police, the woman was on her way to Delhi along with her two year-old-daughter from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh when she was offered a ride by the taxi driver. Trusting him, she had accepted his offer for the 135-kilometer journey.

"The victim told us that the cab driver had sprayed something on her face following which she fell unconscious and later when she came to her senses, she found herself on a bench outside the Nizammuddin railway station in South Delhi where she realised that she has been sexually assaulted."

Her daughter near her was crying, police said.

Police have registered an FIR at Paharganj after medical examination of the woman confirmed rape. The victim, who lives in Mathura, told police that she is in the business of cloth export and used to travel to Delhi often.

Nahan (HP): A teacher of a government school in Shillai area of Sirmaur district was on Saturday booked for allegedly raping a 14-year-old student, police said.

A case was registered Saturday afternoon against the teacher under section 376 of IPC (rape) and relevant section of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), after recording statement of the victim who belongs to Dakkar village, said Yogesh Rolta, DSP Paonta Sahib.

The parents of the victim, studying in the government school in Kyari in Shillai area, alleged that they had lodged the complaint yesterday but police did not register a case. It was after parents of the girls studying in the school staged a protest that the Sirmaur police registered a case of sexual assault against the teacher, they alleged.

The DSP said police parties have been dispatched to nab the accused teacher, who is absconding. Parents of half a dozen girl students have also alleged molestation of their daughters by the teacher.

An emergency meeting of the school's management committee (SMC) was convened yesterday in which agitated parents demanded stringent action against him, school's sources said.

The school headmaster made on the spot inquiries from students and staff members, following which a strongly worded resolution was passed and sent to the education department for immediate action against the teacher, they said.

Aggrieved parents of the victim also filed a complaint with the Shillai police and pressed for registering an FIR in this matter.

Sonipat (Haryana): A man has been arrested for allegedly employing a minor as domestic maid and raping her repeatedly, police said today.

Lajpat, a resident of Hem Nagar here, was arrested yesterday, they said.

The accused was arrested after Jayabir Gehlawat, member of a human rights group here, informed the CJM and DSP that the minor girl was being forced to work as a slave at Lajpat's house and was not even given food, police said.

Following the complaint, a raid was conducted at Lajpat's house and the girl was rescued, they said. The victim alleged that Lajpat had bought her from Punjabi Bagh in Delhi and made her work like a labourer.

She also alleged that Lajpat had sexually assaulted her repeatedly, police said. The accused was presented before a court here today which send him to judicial custody. The victim has been sent for medical examination, police said.

Namakkal (TN): Upset over the suicide of their classmate today over his suspension for alleged misbehaviour, students of a matriculation school here ransacked the office, and broke windowpanes in many classrooms, police said.

No action has been taken against them as the police is awaiting a report from the school, a police officer said.

The Class 12 boy allegedly committed suicide after he was suspended for allegedly misbehaving with lady teachers during a New Year Party thrown by the school, the officer said. He was allowed to stay in the hostel after being asked to bring his parents.

Today, he had informed his classmates that he was going to the bathroom, but did not return following which a search was launched. He was found hanging in his room.

His body was later taken to the government hospital here, the officer said, adding his Madurai-based parents have not yet filed a complaint.

Rewari: A senior health official in Haryana's Rewari district has been booked on charges of sexually harassing a married woman lab technician of a community health centre, police said today.

J S Mehra, the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of Community Health Centre of Bawal town, about 15 km from here, has been booked for sexually harassing the lab technician, and his office clerk Vinod Kumar has been booked for colluding with him, they said.

The lab technician had approached the district police chief with a complaint alleging that the SMO had been persistently coercing her to have physical relation with him. She alleged that when she resisted, she was threatened with dire consequences, police said.

Besides, Kumar too had been frequently coercing her to have sexual ties with the SMO, she further alleged. A case under section 354-A of the IPC (sexual harassment, physical contact, advances involving unwelcome and explicit overtures or any other physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of sexual nature) has been registered against Mehra and Kumar, they said.

Police are investigating the matter and no arrests have been made in this connection yet.

Hyderabad: A 25-year-old widow was allegedly gangraped by two autorickshaw drivers in Sadasivpet of Medak district.

According to the police officials in Sadasivpet police station, the victim, who is a labourer and a widow, is a resident of Maripally.

On Thursday night at around 7.30 pm, she started for her parents’ house in Sadasivpet. She took an auto to reach their home.

The two accused — identified as Sheik Tajuddin and Hussainuddin — both in their thirties and autorickshaw drivers, took her to the outskirts of Sadasivpet and raped her in an isolated place.

The victim approached the police and lodged a complaint late night. A case was registered and investigated. A manhunt has been launched for the accused, cops said.

Dharmapuri: A 37-year-old school teacher was on Friday arrested here on the charge of marrying a minor girl, police said. Police said N. Arumugam of Mulluvadi, 32 km from here, was already married and had married the 14-year-old girl, a relative's grand-daug­hter at Arakka­sana­halli, his nat­ive village, in Nov­e­m­­ber last.

He used to conduct private tuition for the girl, studying in class 10, and reportedly expr­e­ssed his desire to marry the girl to his relative, a 60-year-old woman, police said.

Police registered a case under provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 and arrested Arumugam who has been lodged in the Salem central jail after being produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court and remanded in judicial custody.

The 60-year-old woman is absconding. The minor girl, who was also produced in the court, has been lodged in a government home, police said.

Shillong: In a grisly incident, chopped body parts of a traditional healer were found from several places in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district, police said on Saturday.

"While the man's head and one of his lower limbs were recovered near one of the internal roads leading to Lynshing village, about 40 km from here, his upper limbs and his head were recovered in pieces from a nearby jungle in the village yesterday," East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said.

The victim has been identified as Lovelystar Khongjoh (45) who hails from nearby Umblai village. He had gone missing since Christmas eve, he said.

Khongjoh, a herbal practitioner by profession, is suspected to have been looted and murdered on Christmas Eve when he had gone to Lynshing village for shopping, police said.

The villagers along with the police are still searching for Khongjoh’s torso. His other body parts were kept at the morgue of the civil hospital here for post mortem and a case registered, the police said, adding investigations are on.

During the party, Jeevan and Khanna quarrelled over an old issue and Khanna allegedly hurled abuses at Jeevan. Following this, Jeevan and his associates attacked Khanna and murdered him.

Hyderabad: A 28-year-old woman scientist from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tro-pics (Icrisat) has slapped a legal sexual harassment notice on the management, stating that there was no proper inquiry into a sexual harassment complaint lod-ged by her against her boss about a year ago.

The woman charged the management with trying to hush up the issue and wash their hands off without taking the mandatory actions prescribed by the law such as ensuring a woman member in the commission and making sure that a representative of a neutral Non-Govern-ment Organisation was present.

In her notice, the unmarried scientist stated that she had complained to the governing body about sexual harassment by her boss in January 2013. At that time, she had agreed not to pursue the case if a public apology was rendered by the acc-used. However, it never happened.

“The person responsible for the entire trauma caused to the victim still continues working in the same department despite specific rules,” read the notice. In a reply to her notice, Icrisat said it will reopen the complaint afresh.

Shillong: Three policemen were arrested and suspended from service for allegedly molesting a 12-year-old girl in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district, police said on Saturday.

"We have arrested the police officers based on an FIR lodged against them by the girl's uncle two days ago," District Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh said.

Sub-Inspector Bankerlang Kharshanoh and two other sub-inspectors on probation - Ronald Nongrum and Sylvester Chyne were arrested on Friday evening from Tura.

According to the FIR, the alleged incident took place on December 28 when the girl and her uncle were returning from their shop. They were stopped and allegedly harassed by the three policemen who were in an inebriated condition.

The trio had allegedly assaulted the uncle after accusing him of being a militant and molested the girl inside the auto rickshaw in which they were travelling home.

The policemen later took the two to Chandmari police beat house in Tura town and forced them to sign some papers and took them medical examination before being let off late in the night.

Singh said a woman police officer in the rank of sub-inspector was appointed to probe the incident after which punitive actions would be taken accordingly against the three. A local court has remanded them to 14 days judicial custody.

Bangalore: The Banashankari po­lice has claimed to have solved the murder of 47-year-old Saida by arresting her paramour, who is eleven-years senior to her. The murder was repo­rted on Wednesday. Along with the paramour, the police have also arrested his two accomplices.

Saida was stabbed to death by her paramour on Wednesday night ne­ar the Yarabnagar’s BS­NL office. She was murdered in full public view on the pavement.

The police have identified her lover as Syed Jiaulla and his two associates as Hayaz Pasha alias Hayaz (24) and Me­h­b­­oob Pasha (27). The police said they have recovered an autorickshaw and the kn­ife used during the mu­­rder.

Jiaulla, who owned a mut­ton stall, had an illicit relationship with Saida for the past 15 years. Of late he began suspecting that she was in relationship with another man and they fought often. He forced her to sell her house and give him m­oney, failing which she would be killed, the police said.

Hyderabad: Following a property dispute, an auto driver was murdered by his nephews in Rein Bazaar, on Friday. The accused are Khaleeluddin, 18, Syeduddin, 20, Iqbalud-din, 22, and Nazaruddin, 24. They are all his brother’s children. The victim, Basheeruddin, 33, was a resident of Hafeezbabanagar, in Chandrayangutta.

“Basheeruddin’s sisters, who now live in Saudi Arabia, gave the two brothers some property. Basheeruddin sold his property. He then wanted his brother, Nizamuddin’s share.

Basheeruddin frequently pressurised his brother, a café owner, for a share. Nizamuddin refu-sed.

This led to frequent quarrels between them,” said G. Ramesh, Rein Bazaar police station inspector. On Thursday night, Basheeruddin went to Nizamuddin’s house in Talab Katta, and started fighting. “Enraged by this, the four attacked Basheer-uddin,” said Ramesh.

Hyderabad: The Hayathnagar police on Friday arrested two persons in connection with the murder of Shabana Begum, the 20- year-old who was murdered, about a week ago.

The prime accused who was her paramour was in love with her for the past six months. Recently, he started suspecting her relationship with another man. Thinking he was being cheated, he killed her.

They were traced with the help of their cell phone which was found at the crime spot. The accused men are Moha-mmad Hussain alias Fareed 23, a worker at Padamavathi rice depot, Raj Mohalla, and a resident of Kacheguda and Abdul Rafeeq 23, an auto-rickshaw driver, resident of Bahadurpura. Rafeeq is Hussain’s nephew.

According to the police, Shabana Begum, a native of Ganjugapur village, Gulbarga district, Karn-ataka, came to the city about six months ago and was working in the house of G. Geetha, a Government employee in Raj Mohalla, Ramkoti.

Hussain worked in the same area. Soon, both became friends and later lovers and decided to marry as well. “In the meantime, Hussain learnt that Shabana has a love affair with one Imran. He then decided to get rid of her,” said G. Srinivas Kumar, Hayath-nagar inspector.

He discussed the plot with Rafeeq who supported him. On Decem-ber 29, Hussain summoned Rafeeq to Kach-eguda. Both Hussain and Shabana boarded Rafeeq’s autorickshaw.

After going some distance, Rafeeq diverted his autorickshaw to a road leading to Deshm-ukh village. He drove the vehicle to an isolated place, saying there was some technical problem. “Hussain took Shabana to a nearby bush, on pretext of chatting, and atta-cked her with a knife and screw driver,” said Srinivas.

Chennai: Tir­uvallur police arr­ested on Friday, nine people from Malappuram, Kerala, in connection with the robbery of 7 kg gold, which took place at the Ti­ru­vallur railway station six months ago.

According to police, Kunju Mohammed who was taking the gold to Kerala from the city, was robbed while he was waiting for a train at the railway station.

“The robbery was pla­n­ned and executed by Ra­­sh­id, his former business pa­rt­ner. They had a dispute between them. Rashid knew how Kunju Moha­m­ed usually took the gold fr­om Chennai and planned his ‘operation’ to make it lo­ok like an incident that ha­ppened near Chennai and was executed by a lo­cal gang. We have se­ized Rs 9 lakh and a luxury vehic­le from the gang of su­sp­ects.

It looks like the vict­im also knew that his ex-pa­rtner had executed the cr­ime. So the two sides we­re trying for a settlement th­rough la­w­yers. So we could seize only the ca­sh and vehicle,” police said.

Chennai: Two persons were arrested in connection with Monday’s attempt at robbery on the Indian Union Muslim League’s state secretary Tiruppur Sattar and his son Liyakat Ali at Mannadi.

A gang assulted them with knives and snatched Rs 10 lakh from them. However, they could not escape as public chased the robbers.

The latter had to flee, leaving behind the cash and their bike. Police arrested Venkatesan alias ‘CD’ Venkatesan, 35, and Abdul Khader, 28, from Royapuram.

Customs seizes Rs 30 lakh worth gold at airport

Chennai: Customs officials seized one kg gold worth Rs 30 lakh from two passengers who reached the city airport from Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight at 1.45 am on Friday.

Airport sources said that during routine checking, customs officials found something different in the suitcases brought by Karnataka natives Niranjan Shah (35) and Shiva Kumar (32).

On detailed investigation, the trolley rods in both their suitcases were found to be made of gold and coated with silver. “The passengers were caught with 0.5 kg undeclared gold each. Customs officials have seized the gold and are interrogating the passengers,” the source added.
