Kane’s Late Brace Sends England Into Last 16, Surpasses Pelé’s World Cup Tally
Harry Kane rescues England with dramatic comeback against Congo DR, overtakes Pelé in World Cup goals

England captain Harry Kane delivered a stunning late double to guide England into the Round of 16 with a 2-1 comeback win over Congo DR, while also surpassing Pelé’s World Cup goal tally.
England looked set for a shock exit after Congo DR took an early lead in the seventh minute through Brian Cipenga, who broke through the defence and finished at the near post past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Despite creating several chances, England were frustrated by an inspired performance from Congo DR goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who denied efforts from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. The African side also came close to extending their lead, with Yoane Wissa striking the post.
With time running out, Kane stepped up when it mattered most. He equalised in the 75th minute to bring England back into the contest, drawing level with Pelé’s World Cup tally of 12 goals. Moments later, the Bayern Munich striker struck again to seal victory, moving past the Brazilian legend.
The brace also took Kane’s tournament tally to five goals, placing him just behind Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.
Speaking after the match, Kane said, “It feels amazing. What a crazy game. We kept pushing, and we believed our moments would come. We spoke about having hero moments, and today it was mine.”
The win continues Kane’s remarkable run in international football. He recently surpassed Gary Lineker to become England’s all-time top World Cup scorer and now has 20 goals in major tournaments, along with a record 84 international goals overall.
England will next face co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 at Estadio Azteca on July 5.
After the final whistle, Kane joined teammates and fans in celebrating the dramatic win, urging the squad to enjoy the moment before turning their focus to the next challenge.
