The veteran singer passed away at the age of 88 due to age-related ailments. Her final rites took place on the afternoon of Friday, July 31, 2026, surrounded by family and friends paying their last respects.
Born in May 1938 in Andhra Pradesh, K. Jamuna Rani developed a passion for music at a very young age. Her father, Varadarajulu Naidu, was a private employee, and her mother, Draupadi, was a veena player. Growing up in a musical household, she entered the film industry at the age of 7 and began her film journey by singing for child actors in the movie Thyagayya, directed by renowned actor and filmmaker Chittoor V. Nagayya.
By the age of 13, she had already started getting opportunities as a playback singer for lead actresses, a testament to her exceptional talent. Over the decades, she went on to become one of the most popular voices in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Sinhalese cinema during the 1950s and 60s, where she sang over 6,000 songs. Her early start and dedication to music made her a household name and an inspiration for generations of singers.
Jamuna Rani chose to remain unmarried throughout her life to focus entirely on her music career. In an interview with a Telugu TV channel, she mentioned that she chose to stay away from marriage after seeing the plight of her co-singers who were harassed by their husbands, as a career in films was considered to be below dignity. She lived with her mother and brother, and after their demise, she was reportedly staying in an old age home in Bengaluru.
