Yash’s Toxic Stumble Worries Telugu Stars? Director Weighs In

They reportedly opened strongly in the Telugu states, but the audience was disappointed as the action did not deliver the emotional or storytelling impact they expected.

A Tollywood director believes the underwhelming box-office performance of Kannada star Yash’s Toxic could force several Telugu stars to rethink how they promote their upcoming action films.

According to the director, the action-heavy positioning of Toxic may have created expectations that the film ultimately failed to meet. “The action sequences in Toxic didn’t impress the audience as much as expected, and the film failed to connect at the box office,” he says. “It has sent shivers down the spine of Telugu stars, who are now being forced to rethink their promotional strategies.”

He points to Nani’s approach to The Paradise as an example. While the film is expected to have substantial action, Nani has repeatedly emphasized that the story is fundamentally an emotional drama centred on the relationship between a mother and her son, with action serving as an additional element. “That clearly shows a new promotional idea,” the director adds.

There is little doubt that Yash built a larger-than-life image through the KGF franchise, with his swagger, intensity and action persona making him a major star beyond Kannada cinema. His image was also well received by Telugu audiences. However, the director feels that the expectations created by that image may have worked against Toxic.

“They reportedly opened strongly in the Telugu states, but the audience was disappointed as the action did not deliver the emotional or storytelling impact they expected. The forced action, despite being well choreographed, and the lack of a strong connection with the story affected the film’s run,” he says.

The director believes other young Telugu heroes, including Vijay Deverakonda, Nikhil Siddhartha and Naga Chaitanya, may also need to reconsider how they market their upcoming action-oriented films such as Ranabaali, Swayambhu and Vrushakarma.

“Instead of selling these films purely as big action spectacles, the promotional campaigns should communicate what the core emotion and story are. Telugu audiences want a strong reason behind the action. If the story and logic connect with them, the action automatically becomes more impactful. So, filmmakers should think about this carefully,” he concludes.
