Rakul's Surpanakha Comments Spark Debate on Grey and Dark Characters

Several social media users questioned why actors associated with the film were making such statements ahead of its release.

Noted actress Rakul Preet Singh has landed in the middle of a social media debate after sharing her views on Surpanakha, the character she plays in Nitesh Tiwari’s much-awaited Ramayana.

A video of the actress from a recent interview is now going viral. Speaking about her role, Rakul described Surpanakha as a layered character, pointing out that she is the one who sets the events leading to the war in motion. She also called her a misunderstood character, adding, “She’s a very misunderstood character and has a very… so it’s been really interesting to play something with so many multiple shades.”

However, her comments have not gone down well with everyone. Several social media users questioned why actors associated with the film were making such statements ahead of its release. Some even wondered whether it was a planned promotional strategy to build curiosity around the project.

Others felt that just because an actor is playing a particular character, it does not mean that the character should be portrayed as good or misunderstood. A section of netizens also accused the makers of trying to whitewash negative characters and alleged that such attempts could affect the image of Lord Ram.

Interestingly, some users went a step further, claiming that the repeated comments about the characters were the reason the film was being referred to as Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana rather than simply Ramayana. A few even suggested that the actors were being paid to make such statements in front of the camera.

With the film already generating considerable buzz, Rakul’s comments have added another layer to the debate surrounding the ambitious mythological project.
