Puri Jagannadh Comments on Charvaka Philosophy and God, Sparks Debate

Puri Jagannadh also stressed the importance of human values over labels and beliefs.

Director Puri Jagannadh has once again grabbed attention after his latest “Musings” audio clip went viral across social media platforms. In the speech, the filmmaker openly discussed God, atheism, Hindu philosophy, and the importance of respecting different beliefs, triggering widespread debate online.

Puri Jagannadh said, “If someone says there is no God, many people become angry. But what many people do not know is that Hinduism sees both belief and atheism equally.” He explained that Hindu philosophy has historically encouraged diverse schools of thought and allowed space for questioning and debate.

Speaking about ancient Indian philosophy, he said, “There were schools called Charvaka schools where children were taught that there is no God. They did not believe in soul, karma, rebirth, or heaven.” According to him, the Charvaka philosophy focused on direct experience, logical thinking, and physical reality. He also stated that followers of the school rejected rituals, temples, and religious ceremonies.

The director further highlighted that debates and differing viewpoints were never entirely rejected in Hindu traditions. “Even though many Hindu philosophers opposed Charvaka philosophy, they still preserved those discussions and arguments,” he said. He also pointed out that ancient texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads contain deep discussions and questions surrounding life, truth, and God.

Puri Jagannadh also stressed the importance of human values over labels and beliefs. He said, “More than whether a person believes in God or not, what matters is compassion, honesty, peace, kindness, and self-control.”

According to the filmmaker, a person can remain connected to Hindu culture even without believing in God. He strongly urged people not to view atheists as anti-Hindu. “There is no need to call them anti-Hindu or insult them. If needed, debate with them peacefully, understand their arguments, and learn from each other,” he said.
