Epic Magic Wanes at Box Office, Collects meagre Rs 1.9 cr?

With more than ₹10 crore reportedly at stake in the Telugu states, Epic needs a significant turnaround over the next few days to recover its investment

The biggest hype factor around Epic was undoubtedly the reunion of Anand Deverakonda and Vaishnavi Chaitanya. The duo had already proved their chemistry with Baby, which emerged as a major success and built a strong following among the youth. Naturally, their reunion became one of the biggest selling points of Epic and raised expectations considerably.

However, the film has failed to maintain its opening momentum. “The collections have dropped on Day 2, and the film has so far managed around ₹1.90 crore. It needs to pick up quickly from here,” says a trade source.
With more than ₹10 crore reportedly at stake in the Telugu states, Epic needs a significant turnaround over the next few days to recover its investment. “The holiday period will be crucial for the film. If the crowds pick up during the holidays, there is still a chance for the film to improve its position,” the source adds.
Producer Naga Vamsi had earlier made it clear that he was keen on bringing Anand and Vaishnavi together as the lead pair. After the success of Baby, there was a strong belief within the trade that their combination alone would have enough pull to bring a section of the youth audience back to theatres.
But the early box-office trend suggests that the Baby factor has not translated into the expected theatrical response.
Keeping trade estimates, business figures and the final verdict aside, the immediate reality is that Epic is currently underperforming. The film needs stronger footfalls in the coming days to change the narrative.
To be fair, Anand and Vaishnavi have delivered solid performances, while their chemistry remains one of the film’s better aspects. Director Aditya Haasan also comes up with some interesting writing ideas. However, the execution does not consistently match the intent.
The major problem appears to be in the second half, where the film gradually loses its grip. Several reviews have also pointed towards stretched portions and an uneven climax, which have affected the overall impact.
There was also an expectation that the popularity generated by Baby, combined with the youth appeal of Anand and Vaishnavi, would bring audiences to theatres even if the content was not entirely convincing.
So far, that advantage has not worked to the extent expected.
Epic now needs the holiday crowds to come to its rescue. Whether the Anand-Vaishnavi combination can regain its magic at the box office in the coming days remains the big question.
